My Story

I cut my teeth creating marketing campaigns by working almost a decade in two of the most competitive industries in the world; the mortgage industry and the retail furniture industry.

I was a marketing director and manager, which means that I was in the trenches doing hand-to-hand combat on the business battlefield on a daily basis.

And although I earned a MBA with a marketing concentration from a great college, none of the 60+ courses I passed with flying colors taught me 1% of what I needed to know to create effective marketing campaigns that consistently generate willing, ready and able-to-pay customers in the real world.

It was in the trenches of running a mortgage firm that I learned how to consistently generate real customers by frequently being handed a meager $1,500-$2,000 marketing budget and being held responsible to generate $10,000-$20,000 in revenue from that little itty bitty budget.

And so I had grey hair by 25 and was going bald by 28.

It turns out that those ten years I spent in the mortgage and furniture industry was the best thing that ever happened to me because I learned the truth about what it takes to consistently generate high quality leads and ready-to-buy customers regardless of the economy.

Using the same marketing and direct response principles I used in those industries, I’ve since been able to build a consulting practice that allows me to earn more money and work less (and more flexible) hours – which in the end allows me to be home and spend time with my family.

The Problems I Faced When I Started My Consulting Practice

Although I had almost a decade of experience when before starting my consulting practice, it was hard getting started for several reasons.

The four major problems I faced when I started my consulting practice were:

  1. Proving to business owner’s that I knew what I knew.
  2. Consistently generating quality leads.
  3. Earning enough income from the clients who hired me.
  4. Signing clients to monthly (recurring) contracts.

See, although I had years of experience and a proven track record at my previous employers, I still needed a way to quickly attract, get hired by and prove to potential clients that I had the knowledge, tools and ability to help them generate more sales and revenue.

The Solution To My Consulting Practice Problems

That’s when I begin to search for any way that I could show a prospective client that I knew my stuff and could help them generate more sales and revenue.

At first, I wanted to start by offering free trials of what I could do, but I quickly realized that I was only attracting hordes of freebie-seekers that had no real intention of hiring me on a ongoing (or even a one-time basis).

Not exactly the type of clients I wanted. So, while my pipeline was full, I was struggling to make the type of income I was accustomed to earning.

That’s when I took the time to step back and take a close look at what other successful consultants were doing to build successful consulting practices. I begin to realize what they all had in common.

  • They have published books.
  • They have homestudy courses.
  • They have professional video courses.
  • They use those resources to attract the best types of clients.
  • They built automated lead generation systems around those resources.

That’s when I set out to create those type of credibility building resources and lead generation systems in my own consulting practice.

The results were jaw-dropping.

Instead of scrapping the bottom of the barrel each month to make my month, my systems and resources consistently generate (at least) 5-10 new clients each month.

The other thing that happened, was that clients trusted me and my experise enough to invest in the long-term six to twelve month marketing campaigns.

More importantly, because I am a “verifiable” expert, I am able to charge higher fees and avoid the bidding wars that many new consultants find themselves in.

And on this blog, it’s my goal to reveal every tool, resource and strategy that I use in my business to get those results, so that you can take them and implement them in your consulting practice.
